An Update from the Schwab Executive Leadership Program: Focusing on Leading Innovation

May 05, 2025

At MPM Wealth Advisors, we are committed to continuous learning and bringing the most insightful approaches to benefit our clients and our practice. Our Managing Partner and Lead Advisor, Chelsea Heintschel, has been participating in the prestigious Schwab Executive Leadership Program. We wanted to share an update on her journey.

Chelsea is currently immersed in the second course of the program, "Leading Innovation". This intensive course is designed to help leaders like Chelsea learn various approaches and ideas for infusing innovative thinking into their organizations and fostering a climate where creative problem solving can flourish.

The six week course focuses on how to instill a spirit of innovation into the culture at a firm and harness its power to drive enterprise value. It emphasizes that while innovation doesn't come with guarantees, following a formal process and applying the tools and methods learned can shift the odds for success and enhance leadership skills. Effective leaders, the course highlights, drive innovation by creating conditions that allow people to identify opportunities and generate solutions that enhance enterprise value.

The "Leading Innovation" course defines innovation specifically as a new match between a need and a solution. This novelty can be in the solution, the need, or a new combination of existing ones. Importantly, the course distinguishes innovation from mere improvement (an incremental enhancement) by its novelty and its potential to lead to competitive advantage or a differentiated offering that creates enterprise value.

This comprehensive program draws on distinguished faculty from leading institutions such as The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University, MIT, and the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, among others. The course content was developed by noted experts in the field who share tools and practices for the innovation process. These experts include figures like:

  • Dr. Paul J.H. Schoemaker, a pioneer in decision sciences and strategic decision-making tools.
  • George S. Day, Geoffrey T. Boisi Professor Emeritus at Wharton and founder of the Mack Institute for Innovation Management.
  • Karl T. Ulrich, Vice Dean of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Wharton, covering topics like Design Thinking and Ethnographic Research.
  • Christian Terwiesch, Professor at Wharton and co-director of Penn's Mack Institute, providing insights into Ethnographic Research and Voice of the Customer.
  • Ralph Cummins, a Fellow at Penn State's Institute for the Study of Business Markets with expertise in brand strategy and customer experience.
  • Dr. Alexander Osterwalder and Dr. Yves Pigneur, co-inventors of the Business Model Canvas.

The course covers a wide variety of ideas and approaches that can be put to work immediately. Key modules include:

  • Understanding the critical importance of vigilance and building a strong sensing practice to spot emerging trends and opportunities.
  • Applying Design Thinking to analyze and develop innovation opportunities.
  • Learning how to crowdsource ideas using an innovation tournament.
  • Rethinking the fundamental design of a business using the Business Model Canvas.
  • Redesigning offerings using the Value Proposition Canvas to better serve client needs.
  • Utilizing Journey Mapping to diagram and innovate the client experience.

The goal is to take these ideas, tools, and methods and apply them within one's firm. For us at MPM Wealth Advisors, this means constantly seeking practical ways to achieve the objective of enhancing enterprise value and finding new matches between client needs and solutions.

We are excited about the knowledge and skills Chelsea is gaining from this course, as it will directly contribute to our ongoing efforts to innovate how we serve you, identify opportunities in the market, and ensure we are always evolving to meet your needs effectively. We believe this focus on leading innovation will ultimately help us continue to drive enterprise value for our clients and our firm.

We look forward to sharing more insights from the program in the future!
